SALEM DIVISION TRANSPORTS PARCELS IN GENERAL SECOND CLASS COACHES –A FIRST IN SOUTHERN RAILWAY

The Business Development Unit of Salem Division of Southern Railway is always on the lookout to sustain and improve the commercial activities of the division.  Untiring efforts by the Business Development Unit of Salem Division get new streams of freight traffic.

In continuation of such efforts, today (28.10.2020) Salem Division is transporting boxes of Toned Milk from Salem to Dimapur in Nagaland.

Salem Division has been transporting milk since December, 2019.  Noteworthy is the point that during the difficult times of Covid-19 and complete lockdown, Salem Division transported thousands of boxes of toned milk, loaded in 35 parcel vans, to Assam Rifles.

Today, the milk boxes are being transported in General Second Class coaches and a luggage-cum-brake van coach.

This is a novel initiative.  For the first time in Southern Railway, general second class coaches are being utilized to move parcels.  The Business Development Unit of Salem Division, with its untiring efforts to capture new streams of traffic and boost freight movement, came up with this innovative idea of utilizing general second class coaches to move parcels.

Boxes of Toned Milk, weighing 138 tonnes, are being moved from Salem to Dimapur in Nagaland, fetching a revenue of Rs.9,19,680.  The consignment being moved in a special parcel train, comprising 13 general second class coaches and a luggage-cum-brake van coach, will be delivered to the Assam Rifles.
