The Signal & Telecommunication workshop at Podanur was commissioned in the year 1958 as a mechanical signalling repair shop.  Since then the workshop has grown in size and strength over the decades. The workshop now manufactures about 50 types of signalling equipments. Some of the major products are relays, point machines, block instruments, LED signals, LC gate lifting barriers, panels, etc. The workshop has an annual turnover of Rs.100 crores plus.

Shri R. Baskaran, Principal Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer, Southern Railway inspected the Signal and Telecommunication Workshop, Training Center and Project Unit at Podanur today – 23.09.2020.

Shri R. Baskaran, PCSTE, Southern Railway inaugurated the ‘QN1 relay model’ in front of the Chief Workshop Manager’s administrative office. QN1 relay is one of the pioneer products manufactured by the S&T Workshop, Podanur.  Relays are used in interlocking circuits which is the brain behind the operation of signals required for safe running of trains. Later, he inaugurated the New PCSTE’s Camp Office.

To cope with the prevailing COVID-19 situation, the workshop has installed and commissioned Black Body Thermal Scanner which automatically detects and records the temperature of staff entering the workshop.  This will help in identifying employees with above normal temperature. A New Homoeopathy Dispensary was dedicated to the workshop by the PCSTE. Masks, sanitizer bottles and homoeopathic medicines were distributed to the staff during the event.

Further, the PCSTE released the first VDU table, which could be dismantled, at the Fabrication and released 222nd IRS 220 mm stroke Point Machine at Electromechanical Assembly Shops in the workshop. Point machine is another major product of the workshop used for operation of points for guiding the trains to different tracks. Approximately, 6000 to 8000 nos of such machines are manufactured at the workshop every year. Trolleys are used for inter-shop movement of these machines. New in-house designed coupling arrangement for these trolleys was inagurated. As many as 15 such point machine loaded trolleys were connected together and were pulled by the battery operated platform truck.

Moreover, at the Machine Shop ‘New GeedeeWeiler Make Capstan Lathe’ was inaugurated and at Protective Coating Shop ‘Zinc-Cobalt Plating' was launched.

Ansaldo Make Electronic Interlocking (EI), Single Section Block Proving Axle Counter and Frausher make Multi Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC) were dedicated at the S&T Training Center. This is a big step in training the frontline staff of the S&T department of Southern Railway and South Western Railway in modern signalling equipment such as EI and MSDAC.

Renovated Deputy Chief Engineer’s (S&T) office was also inaugurated.  The office has been provided with new modular furniture with individual working space for staff.
