Passenger trains started running with Electric Engine from today(March 1, 2020) in the Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai-Katpadi Section.

Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle Bengaluru had accorded authorization for running of passenger and freight trains with Electric Engine after the detailed inspection of the Main Line section between Cuddalore-Mayilduthurai-Tiruvarur section last month. A total of four pairs (Eight Trains) of passenger trains were started operation with electric engine from today between Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai (Six passenger Trains) and Villupuram-Katpadi (Two passenger trains).


The 228 Km long Main Line section from Villupuram to Thanjavur via Cuddalore Port is undergoing electrification at a cost of Rs.329.85 crores. Under this project electrification works in the section between Villupuram-Cuddalore port-Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur have already been completed. And the electrification works between Mayilduthurai to Thanjavur is in rapid progress and is likely to be completed by June 2020.
The advantages of running trains with electric engine is, they are environment friendly as it has zero emission of green house gases apart from better pickup and acceleration.




Rail fans welcomed the Passenger Train hauled by Electric Locomotive. Sweets were distributed to the running staffs.
